The arm of a hard drive rests on a cushion of air while the platter spins at 5,400 rotations per minute. IBM invented the world’s first hard drive in 1956, the IBM Model 350 Disk File. It contained 50 24-inch sized platters that were capable of storing just 5 megabytes of data, the average size of a modern MP3 file. Today, some consumer hard drives are capable of storing up to 3 terabytes of data and come in sizes smaller than a deck of cards.
